An Everyday Chilean Superstar
2006 Pargua II, $19.99
A Cork & Bottle Exclusive
It is a poorly kept secret that, in general, I have a genuine dislike for most Chilean wines. Perhaps its because its because a lion’s share of them are manufactured in a corporate manner and taste either like green, under ripe gym socks or muddy eggplants deep fried in sulfur. That said, it bears noting that there are indeed some fantastic wines produced in Chile (it is, after all, really irresponsible to generalize an entire country’s wine quality) and for me to get really excited by one, buy all of it available to us and then put it at the top of our weekly email should merit some attention.
The wine in question is Pargua II, a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Carmenere, 15% Syrah, 10% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 2& Petit Verdot and it will knock your socks off. Robert Parker awarded Pargua II 91 points and called it “exceptional drinking.” Wine Enthusiast describes the Pargua as a “very warm, rich and smooth wine . . .If super rich is your thing, then Pargua was made for you.” Well, we couldn’t say it any better ourselves. With under 3,000 cases in total produced (a drop in the bucket by under $20 Chilean wine standards) and with a paltry seven, yes 7, cases of this incredible gem available to Louisiana it is going to disappear quickly. So come and grab a bottle or two before its all gone (or a glass in Clever)!
