With each Wine of the Week, we here at Cork & Bottle want to bring you wonderful gems that bring a little joy to your week and will not break your bank in this crazy economy. And so this week brings us to an Italian wine that is just flying off the shelves and is bringing smiles to the faces of many of our customers. If you have not had a chance at this one, here you go!

The Cortenova Primitivo hails from the “heel” of the Italian boot, the Salento penisula in Puglia. This Greek-inspired area with gorgeous coastline and crystal Mediterranean water is quite flat and hot, with a rust colored, iron-rich soil. The exposure to consistent heat turns out substantially ripened grapes ready for immediate release and bursting with luscious, juicy fruit.

This Primitivo is instantly inviting, with a lovely color of dark cherry, while the nose and palate remind me of those of juicy red plums that lady from Alabama sells at our Farmer’s Market.  There’s also a little herbal quality on the nose too and the wonderful Italian character shines through marking it as an old world wine with bright, inviting accessibility to anyone. This wine can definitely handle a slight chill (a major plus for drinking a red wine in this hot weather), or be a lovely component to a Mediterranean style pizza with olives and herbs. Either way, this wine is an easy and simple joy to drink, and will surely have you coming back for more. And with a price tag of $9.99, who could blame you?

Cheers!

This Primitivo is instantly inviting, with a lovely vibrant color of dark cherry, while the nose and palate display a definitive nature of juicy red plums. As time passes, the nose develops into one of red fruits mingled with wildflowers and herbs, most notably wild raspberry. All the while, the wonderful Italian character shines through marking it as an old world wine with bright, inviting accessibility to anyone. This wine can definitely handle a slight chill (a major plus for drinking a red wine in this hot weather), or be a lovely component to a Mediterranean style pizza with olives and herbs.
