Wine of the Week
NV Verget “Au Fils du Temps”,”As Times Goes By”
France, $9.99
So folks, I have discovered my new everyday go to wine. And by this I mean I could literally drink this any and every day of the week. We got it in last week and literally sold out in one day. Its that good. It’s Verget’s “Au Fil du Temps”, or “As Time Goes By”. A non-vintage blend of Syrah, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a few other varieties, it is one of the best values in French wines I’ve seen since all of our Robert Kacher super-gems.
The producer, Verget, is a negociant, buying only handpicked grapes from chosen vineyards and then assuming full control of the winemaking process after harvest. What results is an array of top-quality wines from all across Burgundy, including Chablis, Puligny and Chassagne-Montrachets, Meursault, Corton-Charlemagne, and several from the Maconnais. Described by Stephen Tanzer as “natural” and “pure”, Verget wines exhibit precise varietal characteristics with clean and classic aromas and palates.
In this case, Verget has sourced red varietals, and produced a lovely, accessible, yet fully French style table wine. Immediate aromas of garrigue(aka earth and a touch of animal) will tell you that. But there are also wonderfully vibrant notes of cherry, wild raspberry, pepper and stone. It’s a irresistible nose for wine lovers, followed by a smooth, easy red fruit palate that just begs you to take another sip. And another. I’m telling you, finishing a bottle and wanting to open another is in your future. And at $9.99, you can. It’s a no-brainer. Cheers!
